WILLIAM FAULKNER LETTER - Extremely scarce letter from author William Faulkner (1897-1962) in response to an Indiana University student, expounding for 2/3 of a page torn from a yellow pad, in his tiny handwriting, on the subject of LOVE! Includes the original envelope, postmarked from Oxford, Mississippi, dated March 28, 1950, along with an account of the receipt of the letter from a diary. The transcription is as follows: "What reporter? The only one I can think of in connection with my work is the one in Pylon. He had no name. He was not anonymous: he was every man. I think that every young man, no matter how ugly - dwarf, freak, cripple, halitosis, all - has once in him the capacity for one great love or sacrifice for love, to a loved one, a beloved. But most of us miss it. We are dumb ourselves, or fail to get it across, or we choose (if there is a choice). We marry one, either unworthy, or too big, too strong for us, out of our class anyway. Thats what he did. Tragic, sad, worse; but better than nothing. In fact, the best is not to be loved, but to love; if you have read far enough, you will remember another character of mine who said 'Between grief and nothing, I will take grief. Faulkner." The author of 'As I Lay Dying', 'The Sound and the Fury' and 'Absalom, Absalom!' was famously private and seldom expounded on the motivations for his work. This letter was published as part of "Selected Letters of William Faulkner", edited by Joseph Blotner, Random House, New York, 1977 (page 301) and in a limited edition (100 copies) monograph with intro by Richard Lyons, having an off-set copy of the original, by The Merrykit Press, Fargo, ND, July, 1974.
