SPRINGFIELD 1863 MUSKET, GAR SWORD, & SABER BELONGING TO NAVY LANDSMAN

A lot including a Springfield 1863 musket made for the Massachusetts militia, a M1860 G.A.R. sword, and an M1860 cavalry saber alleged to belong to U.S. Navy landsman Alexander Mackerell of Athol, Massachusetts. The musket is marked with the rack number "41" and is in overall fair condition with pitting present around the breech and the percussion nipple heavily damaged. The firearm is marked on the lockplate "S.N. & W.T.C. for Massachusetts" indicating it as one of 13,000 rifles ordered from Samuel Norris and William T. Clement by Massachusetts. Rifling is still visible in the bore with areas of frosting and some pitting near the chamber. The saber is a M1860 which replaced the earlier M1840 "wristbreaker" sabers and saw service through much of the Civil War. This particular sword has several nicks along the edge of the blade and part of the guard bent upwards. The other sword was made for members of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization of Union veterans. It has a GAR superimposed monogram on the shell guard, between a Naval Anchor on the left, and three stacked rifles on the right. The 30" blade is etched on both sides, with a Federal Eagle on an E PLURIBUS UNUM banner on one side, and G.A.R. on the other. There are also numerous stands of arms and other military motifs. Included with the lot is correspondence addressed towards Mackerell's widow concerning the transfer of his pension payments.
