ROBERT S. DUNCANSON (NY/OH/MI, 1821-1872)

"Twilight," circa 1849, oil on canvas, signed lower right. An evocative landscape by Robert Seldon Duncanson, this twilight painting is among the artist's earliest known works and reflects his engagement with the Hudson River School. In a custom 22K gold match corner ribbed cove frame.

Conservation treatment was carried out by a leading professional conservation studio. The surface has been cleaned to remove accumulated dirt, soot, a discolored soft resin varnish, and old overpaint. Minor scattered stains, small historic losses, and limited frame-related abrasions were addressed with precise inpainting. The work was subsequently finished with multiple layers of UV-protective varnish, including a final matte application, resulting in a beautiful satin surface.

Dating to circa 1849, the work belongs to a formative period in Duncanson's career, displaying his emerging lyrical approach to landscape painting. Born in Fayette, New York, Duncanson was among the most important nineteenth-century American landscape painters and one of the first African American artists to achieve international recognition. Accompanied by the definitive reference on the artist, "Robert S. Duncanson and His Courageous Southern Travels," in which this work is included by leading scholars Michael F. Meyer and Julie E. Meyer. According to a previous owner, the work was first discovered on an island in the Caribbean.

Provenance: Lawrence W. Cramer, Secretary General of the Caribbean Commission, U.S. Virgin Islands; Private Collection, North Carolina; acquired by the present owner.
