RARE HISTORIC FORTRESS SIZED CIVIL WAR 34 STAR US FLAG, PHILADELPHIA, ABT 12 x 22 FEET

Monumental Military Contract Wool Bunting Flag, by Wm Horstmann of Philadelphia, standard regulation Jan 1861-Sept 1863, between Kansas and West Virginia Statehood, completely hand stitched except for re-attachment of the cotton hoist. At roughly 12 x 22 feet, this was certainly for use on a public building or military fort. The hoist is marked by Horstmann, and has inked names "Wm. S. Johnson" and "J.L. Johnson', members of one of the oldest and wealthiest families of Germantown, a Philadelphia neighborhood 3 miles from Independence Hall (the family house, built 1768,was damaged in the Battle of Germantown in 1777, still stands). It was home to four generations of the Johnson family, Quakers and Abolitionists descended from tanner Dirck Jansen (abt. 1620- bef, 1687), who owned the land from a William Penn grant. John Johnson Sr built the stone house at what is now 6303 Germantown Road. It was a well used stop on the Underground Railroad, is now a National Historic Monument.
It is probable this flag is from Fort Mifflin, the Revolutionary War fort on Mud Island, 7 miles below Phila. on the Delaware River. The expanded fort became a POW stockade in 1863, holding many Confederate soldiers.
Old string tags are marked "Mrs. H.S. Montgomery, Savings Fund Society (founded 1854), Germantown, Pa, / Mrs. Lester B. Johnson, 1012 Stephen Girard Blvd, Philadelphia PA".& "Flag from Germantown, PA, Ellen P. Johnson, 'The Larches', The Misses Perkins, Castine, Maine". The flag was consigned by a Castine family.
Some wear, repairs, minor insect loss, but genuinely remarkable condition. 138" (11'- 6") x 260" (21' - 8").
