RARE CIVIL WAR GANGWAY BOARD FROM USS HARTFORD, FARRAGUT'S FLAGSHIP

Skewed Archtop Fitted Gangway Board in mahogany, featuring a sea creature, robing, a star and 'seaweed' scrolls, circa 1862. The USS Hartford, a steam/sail Battleship was the Flagship of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut's for the entire Civil War. This was aboard the ship during the Battle of Mobile Bay, during which Farragut uttered the immortal phrase "Damn the Torpedoes, Full Speed Ahead!" when making the sally that led to the capture of three forts and the Confederate fleet and the Union control of the Mexican Gulf. She was ultimately broken up in Kittery, Maine in 1926. Edge bound in metal strapping, having one of the two original bronze eyelets. Fitted with sturdy screw-in legs for use as a low table. 47.5" long by 21.5" wide. The board is 2.25" thick and 17" tall on legs.
The opposing mate to this is in the collection of the Maine Historical Society of Portland, Maine.
