RARE 15TH C. JAPANESE BUDDHIST STATUE IN LATER CABINET, DR. JANE MAHLER

Muromachi Period Standing Gohanzan of Kichijoten, the female deity of Fortune, wife or sister of Bishamonten, Guardian of the North, one of the Seven Lucky Gods associated with the New Year. She is dressed in the robes of a lady of the Chinese Tang Dynasty. She is making the gesture of segan-in, granting desires, in the other hand she holds the Treasure Gem Hojo, representing the overcoming of obstacles. Carved from a single block, in remnants of gilding, worn by adulation. She is preserved in a large 18th c. Meiji black lacquered Butsudan. 14 1/2" tall figure, 25" x 14" x 8" cabinet. One small gilt panel missing from interior, both feet of figure missing portions.

Includes friendly correspondence in the late 70's with Dr. Jane Gaston Mahler (1906-2001), Professor of Ancient History, Southeast Asia at Barnard College and Columbia University. She was the subject of the book "Across the Horizon: The Life and Times of Dr. Jane Gaston Mahler", published by Richard M. Cote, 1998. Found in drawer of altar.
