PRESENTATION SWORD BRIG GEN SYLVESTER CHURCHILL, USA INSPECTOR GEN MEXICAN WAR

1840 Model US Army NCO Ames Highest Quality Presentation Sword presented for actions at the Battle of Buena Vista Feb 22-23, 1847, given to Brig Gen Sylvester Churchill (1783-1862) and with engraved presentation, having gilt furnishings and scabbard, black leather grip, fine and bright etched blade. Scabbard marked by Ames Cabotville Works. Includes original chamois (worn) storage bag. Sword is in fine condition, small dents to scabbard.

Tagged as property of E.B. Cullen, descended via Major Gen. D.D. Slade (1823-1896) of Chestnut Hill, Boston, Special Inspector of General Hospitals in Washington, DC during the Civil War.
Churchill led the troops who blocked the center charge of Mexicans under Santa Anna, losing 80 men in the twenty minute fight, having his horse shot three times and his reins cut by fire while calmly directing the men in formation, stemming the Mexican advance in restricted terrain.

Per Appletons' Cyclopedia of American Biography, 1600-1889:

He served in the War of 1812-1815. In March 1812, he was appointed a lieutenant of artillery. In August 1813, he was made captain of a company that he raised. He protected Macdonough's fleet when it was attacked while undergoing repairs. On August 29, 1813, he became assistant inspector general and was ordnance officer under General Wade Hampton, serving until the end of the war. He participated in the attack on La Colle Mill. He was on the staff of General Izard and was acting adjutant general to General Macomb at Plattsburg. On April 6, 1835, he became major of the 3d artillery and served during the war with the Creek Indians. He acted as inspector general of the Creeks and was in Florida from July 1836 to 1841. On June 25, 1841, he was appointed inspector general. He accompanied General Wool in the Mexican war. On February 23, 1847, he was promoted brevet brigadier general in recognition of his actions during the battle of Buena Vista. On September 25, 1861, he retired from active service.
