REMARKABLE 19TH C TRAVEL JOURNAL - Handwritten 'Journal of Travels 1870-71, W.C. Peckham, vol 1', recording the Pacific sojourn of former GAR Adjutant General William Clark Peckham, who served as a Private in the Mass 23rd Vols, was Principal of Leicester Academy and Wiliston Seminary in Easthampton, Mass. Dates Oct 24, 1870 to March 31, 1871 and details shipboard life and explorations in China, over 400 pps, including the original ships log pages from his voyage on the Clipper Ship 'Surprise' of New York, Chas. A. Randlett, Master. He even provides a table of contents, containing striking events such as a tsunami that crushes a Russian ship with a loss of over 500 men, his grew catching and eating a dolphin, the ship being swamped by what we would now call a 'rogue wave', Chinese men prostituting their wives and selling mother's milk on the streets of Shanghai,; in the original 8" x 10" binding, disbound but text block is intact, clean, a few sketches.
