EVERETT SHINN (NY/PA, 1876-1953)

"It Still Remains Whimsically Individual and Village Like", pastel and gouache on paper, signed lower center and dated '99, in gilt neo-classical frame, linen mat, under UV glass. The image was created to illustrate the article "Cross Streets of New York" in the November 1900 issue of Scribner's Magazine, and the title is taken from the text of that article.

Everett Shinn lived around the corner from the Greenwich Village alley probably off Sullivan Street. He had moved to NYC in 1897 and bought a building at 114 Waverly Place, his residence as a leader of the Social Realist movement known as The Eight.
