COMMEMORATIVE PORTFOLIO ENGRAVINGS - 'Outlines and Sketches' by Washington Allston, Engraved by J. and S.W. Cheney, Boston, 1850, published by Stephen H. Perkins, with preface that explains that these are from sketches found in Allstons Cambridge, Mass. studio after his death in July of 1843, giving an explanation of how the Daguerreotype process was used to transfer the images to the plates, 16" x 21 1/2" sheets with paper covered boards, gilt tile, leather spine, front board off but present, foxing throughout. Washington Allston (1779-1843) was one of the leading painters of the American Romantic movement, known for his Biblical studies, this was an effort on the part of his friends, brothers John Cheney (1801-1885) and Seth Wells Cheney (1810-1856) to preserve his drawings using a newly discovered technique. Rare in any condition.
