(2 VOLS) "STRICTURES ON THE MODERN SYSTEM OF FEMALE EDUCATION" BY HANNAH MORE, INSCRIBED 1799 THE DOHENY COPY W/ FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS
More, Hannah. "Strictures on the Modern System of Female Education. With a View of the Principles and Conduct Prevalent among Women of Fortune." London: T. Cadell, 1799. Two volumes. Octavo, contemporary full red straight grain morocco gilt, raised bands, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt, each volume with fore-edge painting.

Second edition of More's classic work on female education, presentation copy inscribed by her on the half title of Volume I, "From the Author". Each volume with a beautiful contemporary fore-edge painting, the set in lovely contemporary binding by C. Kalthoeber. The Estelle Doheny copy, with her bookplates.

The two lovely fore-edge paintings depict the town of Douglass on the Isle of Man and Windsor Castle. Carl J. Weber, in compiling his standard reference works "A Thousand and One Fore-edge Paintings" (1949) and "Fore-edge Painting" (1966) made extensive use of Estelle Doheny's large collection of fore-edge paintings; the present volumes were part of this renowned collection. More's "Strictures" was intended to remedy the social injustices inherent in the educational system of her day, and was enthusiastically received. More already had a reputation as a great moral writer, "Possessing a masterly command over the resources of our language, and devoting a keen wit and a lively fancy to the best and noblest purposes... She did, perhaps, as much real good in her generation as any woman that has ever held a pen". (Allibone, 1361). With Doheny's leather bookplate in each volume. Early owner signatures; early dealer inscription tipped to half titles. Bindings by C. Kalthoeber of London (with binder's tickets on front free endpapers). Extremely good. A lovely set with esteemed provenance, most desirable inscribed.
Purchased from and described by Bauman Rare Books of New York and Philadelphia.
