Description:

EXT RARE EARLY TYPEWRITER - The Hammond Model #1, the First True Commercial Typewriter, this stamped 'Remodel 313' where the serial number would be, placing it in the developmental stage between the initial 1880 patent and the 1884 beginning of the production run, this having the original oak case, ebony wood keys, gutta percha ribbon reels and 'Hammond' crescent above keys, with single-bar flywheel (ultimately replaced with the three-arm wheel), 7 1/4" tall, 14" x 12 1/2" case, the machine needs cleaning, but is entirely intact and currently functioning, if a bit slowly; the case has wear and scuffs. This lot includes a period mahogany stand that suits the typewriter very well for display purposes. This is a museum quality bit of early American Industrial Age technology.
