1818 WALLET OF THOMAS TILESTON, BOSTON / NYC SHIP OWNER

Original Leather Wallet owned by Thomas Tileston (1793-1864) famous as partner in large shipping firm "Spofford & Tileston", large shippers to the South, the West Indies and South America, stamped in gold with his name and in black by the maker Jason Mann (1789-1864), "Made by Jason Mann, Holden, Mass, 1818". The receipts and papers inside are from the 1830's and 1840s, probably set aside when the wallet was replaced with a newer model.

Leather is still supple, the wrap-around strap pliable and undamaged.

1818 was the year that the business office moved from Boston to NYC, and the wallet likely given to the successful young businessman to commemorate the event. Tileston is buried in the tiny "New York Marble Cemetery" in the East Village, 2nd & 3rd streets and 2nd Ave. Established in 1830, it is the oldest public non-denominational cemetery in NYC.
