1777 REVOLUTIONARY WAR POWDER HORN OF ZEBULON VAUGHN, 5TH MASS REGT

Incredible Scrimshaw Powder Horn marked "Zebulon Vaughn, Rgt Mass 5, RP, 26 Day September, 1779, Made at Beadford of New York, Made by Me, ZV", having a richly detailed depiction of Camp, Artillery, a 13-star flag on a revetment, and the elevation of a mill with waterwheel and a steeple. Also features wildlife (including deer, fish, birds, and oddly, an owl on a pine tree marked "OWL"). The horn itself is two-toned, made by scraping away part of the first layer. It retains the original wooden butt and pewter inlaid spout. 13 1/2" long.
Zebulon Vaughn served 1777-1780 in the Massachusetts 5th Regiment, from Worcester, Mass. He witnessed Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga. He kept a journal the whole time (with atrocious spelling typical of the era), which was published by the DAR in the 1920s. The original remains in their collection. Faithfully kept journals from the Continental Army are rare, especially when kept by a common soldier.
"Sartoday this day we marched to Stillwater and made a halt to draw provisions [provisions] for dinner
with all Janiral Burgwine [Gen. Burgoyne's Army this is the glorey of a miriakin [miracle] Boys Now we have Shoed [shown] them how th amarken [American] Boys can fight when Cannons Roring lers flying toryes and Ingens diying this is the glory of a fiet [fight] of war."
OS: 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.)
